Collagen, which means "glue" in Greek, is a naturally occurring protein found in all mammals. It has been used as a biomaterial in medicine and surgery for almost a century, for example in sutures, haemostatic agents, wound dressing and heart valve replacements.
Zyderm and Zyplast are among the most highly refined forms of collagen. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants are composed of highly purified bovine (cow) dermal tissue.
Both products are licensed in the US and UKfor the correction of facial lines, wrinkles and scars. The injected collagen works with the body's natural collagen to support the skin. The correction provided by both Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants will disappear with time and the treatment must eventually be repeated.
Introduced in 1981 and 1985 respectively, Zyderm® and Zyplast® collagen implants have set the standard in filler materials for smoothing facial lines, wrinkles and scars and in providing lip border definition. Today, more than 1.5 million people worldwide have been treated with Zyderm or Zyplast collagen implants. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants made by INAMED Aesthetics, are FDA approved to treat fine to deep wrinkles, frown lines, smile lines, crow's feet, the lip border, acne and other scars.
Treatment with Zyderm and Zyplast implants consists of an initial consultation with a experienced physician. A skin test must be administered 4 weeks prior to treatment to screen for a pre-existing allergy to bovine collagen. Some 3% of patients have reported allergic reactions to bovine collagen. If the skin test is the negative then treatement consists of a simple procedure that can be completed quickly and conveniently, for example during a lunch hour.
Most patients return to their normal routine immediately following the procedure. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen is injected through a tiny needle just below the surface of the skin to smooth wrinkles or define the lip border. Treatments generally last 3 to 6 months.
